This is My Story

James Russell "Bo" Bundage, Sr. was born in Baytown, Texas in 1940.  During his spiritual maturation, he developed and believed in two inspirational guiding stars. The first guiding star was his biblical beliefs and teachings which taught him the compassion, kindness, and love which he had for and showed to his fellow man. The second guiding star was his favorite inspirational quote, "No challenge is permanent, and no obstacle is unconquerable." The quote influenced and helped in formulating and maintaining his competitiveness, work ethics, fortitude, and "never give-up spirit", all which he applied to and throughout life.

He was a 1960 graduate of George Washington Carver High School's Fighting Panthers , later changed to the Buccaneers. James, mostly known as "Bo", developed an interest in sports during his eighth-grade year where he played basketball.  Once in high school, he lettered in basketball and track. Though placed in area track meets throughout high school, it was during his senior year that this quiet gentle young man unleashed his athletic talents.  Members of the Panther mile relay team of which he served as team captain earned the 1960 district and state championships. As an individual, he was district champion in the 440 yd. dash and placed 2 nd in the state in this event. Based on these stellar athletic performances in 2011 he was selected and inducted into the PVILCA Hall of Fame.

In 1960-61, James entered Texas Southern University. However, he was drafted and stationed in Germany during the Vietnam Era. He served courageously and honorably in the United States Army where he rose to the rank of SPEC 4 and earned a Marksman badge. Upon discharge, he was employed by Humble Oil Refinery, now ExxonMobil and was a Mechanical Craftsman and Mechanical Supervisor. He served as president of the Exxon Golf Club and served on its board. After 31 years, he retired from ExxonMobil in 2000.

Bo was a community servant as well. He volunteered as a basketball and baseball coach for the Baytown YMCA and Little League Association, respectively.  He was an avid golfer, loved travelling and especially loved reading the Bible.  After retirement, he also tried cooking. With breakfast being his specialty, he especially delighted himself in serving his wife breakfast daily.

To continue his spiritual growth, Bo joined Mount Calvary Baptist Church. He was a dedicated passionate member of the Mount Calvary Mission group where he often severed as a prayer leader. In addition, he was a member of the Seasoned Saints and Sunday school.  He was the co-chair of Mount Calvary's Black History program.  He received The Seasoned Saint's Legend award.  He along with his wife initiated a personal Widows/Widowers ministry to assist and support those who lost their loved ones. For his kindness and gentle spirit Bo was loved by those who knew him, for he often encouraged people to "Show Love, Kindness and Compassion" to their fellow man. His many acts of kindness, compassion and spirit of love have been an inspirational example for others in church and community.

James completed his earthly assignment on December 4, 2022, leaving the love of his life, Irma to whom he was married for 51 years.  Along with his wife, his three children, Michael, Keisha, James "Russell" Jr., and three grandchildren Jarnae, Darshan, Dylan helped to make his life complete. Cherishing his memory are Willie Williams-Brother; Carrie Jackson: Mother-in-law; Sisters-in-law: Diane Radka (Lyn), Karen Washington (Arthur), Rhonda Shorts (James); Brothers-in-law: Douglas Pines (Lula), David Pines (Cathy); Roosevelt Paul (Chanel); Guardian-daughter/Grand Heart Kenedi Lynch; nieces, nephews, cousins, many relatives and friends.

B o will be greeted by his loved ones, Willie and Sam, parents and siblings Frances, Cecil, and A.D.
