Obituary

Nelson Bates Jr., a devoted Christian, and Man of Faith was called home to be with Our Lord on July 18th, 2025. In his passing he was surrounded by loved ones.

Nelson is survived by his daughter, Velma Bates; his daughter-in-law, Tasha Bates; his grandchildren, Jazzmin Bates, Meshach Bates and wife (Jasmine Bates), and Myshae Bates; and several brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, cousins and lifelong friends.  He is preceded in death by his parents, Nelson Bates Sr. and Lena Mae George; by his wife, Katherine Bates; his daughter, Gwendolyn Bates; his son, Paul Bates; and his grandson, Kyle Bates.

Nelson was born in Baytown, TX on March 31st, 1933.  He graduated from George Washington Carver High School in 1950 and played the trumpet in the band.  He served his country in the United States Army from December 10th, 1953 to December 9th, 1955.  Nelson loved his family and the entire McNair community.  You could generally find him driving the roads of McNair with a big 'ol smile on his face, playing cards with close friends, escaping to the casino, or enjoying a great big piece of lemon pie.  Nelson positively impacted the lives of everyone he came in contact with and did so through a genuine extension of love.  We were all precious in his eyes, and he in ours.

Nelson was a devoted father, son, brother, husband, friend, Papa, and Child of God.  He was a member of the Washington Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Baytown, TX where he served as an elder for many years.  Nelson longed to be with Our Lord and Savior and in his passing, we find peace and comfort in knowing he's finally home.
