With heavy hearts, we honor the extraordinary life of Shirley Dixon Alfred, who departed this world on July 14, 2026, in Baytown, Texas, at the age of seventy-eight. Born on October 29, 1947, in the vibrant city of Chicago, Illinois, Shirley’s journey was one illuminated by unwavering dedication to education, ministry, and shaping the lives of all those fortunate enough to cross her path.

Shirley was a guiding light whose exceptional presence drew people to her. Her warmth, kindness, and innate ability to reach out to others created a circle of trust wherever she went. Teaching was her true calling, and her passion for education was evident in all her endeavors. For twenty-six remarkable years, she served as Department Chair with Lee College of Baytown, Texas. In this role, she transformed not only her department but also the hearts and minds of countless students and colleagues. Shirley was more than an educator; she was a mentor and a friend, nurturing growth and inspiring excellence with gentle wisdom and steadfast encouragement.

Beyond the halls of academia, Shirley’s compassionate spirit found profound expression through her service in the Caregivers Ministry at Mt. Rose "City of Refuge" Church. It was here that her generosity and empathy shone brightest, offering comfort, support, and guidance to those in need. This ministry remained one of her proudest accomplishments, a testament to her lifelong devotion to uplifting others.

Shirley’s legacy is defined by her boundless love for people and her selfless contributions to her community. Those who knew her cherished her magnetic personality, a rare gift that united and inspired, making all feel seen, heard, and valued. Family, friends, colleagues, and students whose hearts are entwined with Shirley’s memory are invited to join in commemorating her life. A viewing will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2026, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Rose City of Refuge, 13000 Crosby Lynchburg Road, Crosby, TX 77532. This will be followed by a Celebration of Life at Mt. Rose City of Refuge, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., where stories will flourish and gratitude will be expressed for the life of a truly remarkable woman. The burial will take place at Sterling White Cemetery, 11011 Crosby Lynchburg Road, Highlands, TX 77562, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
